On July 6, Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (30-5-1, 24 KOs) will face off against Wilson Alcorro (35-7-3, 23 KOs) live on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. It should be Campbell’s last non-title fight before getting a shot at a belt, as he is the IBF’s mandatory challenger to champion Julio Diaz.

Recently, Campbell got a chance to try his hand at something he hopes to do when he retires from the sport of boxing. On June 22, ESPN2 had him in studio as their guest commentator. “I loved being on ESPN,” said Campbell in an exclusive interview with FightNews. “They were all very gracious and helped me out a lot. I think I did well. I’d really like to get into that one day.”

But before Campbell starts thinking about retirement, he’s got a few key fights ahead of him. The Florida native has gained many fans and attracted a lot of attention over the years. The sound of excitement, from being so close to a title fight, could be heard in Campbell’s voice when he said, “I’m training hard for this fight. I’ve really put my heart into it. I’m making great strides as a fighter. I’m thankful for my fans—they’ve kept watching me and have given me a reason to keep doing what I do.”

When asked how his training camp was going, Campbell replied, “I want to fight a good fight. I don’t want to work on anything new. I think what I’ve got is enough. I’m just making small adjustments now. I’ve been sparring with a lot of young talent, like Derrick Samuels.”

Through the years, Campbell has fought many talented fighters, earning some high-profile fights without the help of a big name promoter—Terry Trekas, Director of One Punch Productions, has handled all business aspects for Campbell. However, with a showdown looming later this year against IBF champion Julio “The Kidd” Diaz, a big promoter came knocking. “Don King is now my co-promoter, along with Terry Trekas,” Campbell explained. “Don King is the best move I could make right now. He is going to make sure I get my fights. That’s why I’m not worried (about getting a shot at Diaz).”

Don King is a seasoned veteran in the sport of boxing. His name can be found attached to many of the legendary events and boxers the sport has housed throughout the years. He has also been a part of the drama the sport attracts. “Someone once told me a joke about Don King,” Campbell began, “it went; ‘Don King has screwed more fighters than Trojan has made condoms.” Campbell continued, “What I see is all the fighters he’s promoted have made money. How can you complain about that? I like the guy, and he’s going to make me a champion.”

With all the buzz about Diaz’s November deadline to fight Campbell, one could easily believe Campbell might be overlooking his next fight with Alcorro. However, as Campbell explains, this is not the case. “I’m not looking past him, or talking about who I’m fighting next. He (Alcorro) is top priority on my list,” Campbell stated. “He’s never been in the ring with Nate Campbell. I’m going to show my presence from the very first bell. All he can hope for is to survive.”

Before the interview concluded, Campbell gave a prediction, “Nate Campbell by knockout before the last bell rings. That’s what I’m looking for.”

Campbell’s return to the ESPN2 airwaves will be broadcast from Entertainment Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds. More information about that event can be found at www.onepunch.net.
