In the main event of Solo Boxeo’s Telefutura card at the Texas Station Hotel in Las Vegas, former Michigan State football player Seth Mitchell remained undefeated by laying waste to the walking heavy bag known as Hector Ferreyro with a third round TKO.
Mitchell (23-0-1, 17 KOs) came out his corner and immediately slammed power shots into the soft belly of the terribly out of shape Ferreyro (21-11-2). With the Texas fighter offering nothing back, Mitchell turned the fight into a glorified sparring session. In the third round Mitchell cut loose a devastating right hand that draped Ferreyro’s body over the top rope as referee Robert Byrd started the count. From there, it was all elementary as Mitchell blew him away with his entire arsenal until Byrd mercifully halted the fight at the 2:17 mark.
At this point in his career, Mitchell needs a major step up in competition as these pointless bouts do nothing for his progress. – Andreas Hale
Diaz outpoints “Slow Motion” Smith
It was more school yard brawl than professional boxing match. Larry Smith stuck his tongue out and played defense for the majority of the lopsided eight-round decision loss to Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz. Smith was relegated to jabs for the majority of the bout but couldn’t keep Diaz at bay. He was stung with a blistering shot to the body in the second round courtesy of a left hand. Another series of hard shots late in bout bloodied Smith’s nose. Despite not taking much damage, “Slow Motion” wasn’t in the fight beyond the first frame. The judges scored the bout 80-72 and 79-73 twice for Diaz who remains undefeated. – Anthony Springer Jr
Carthron Upends Morales
In a relatively uneventful, but rather loud heavyweight affair, Andrae Carthron outworked the 295-pound Alvaro Morales to earn a split decision victory.
Compton’s Carthron was busier than his heavy set opponent and being in shape paid off in a major way. Morales may not have been in shape, but he used his sizable weight advantage to smother Carthron and occasionally slip in a combination. But the inactivity between rounds would do him in as Carthron earned scores of 58-56 and 59-55 while Morales had one judge see the fight in his favor 58-56. With the victory, Carthron improves to 6-7-2 while Morales falls to 6-10-6. – Andreas Hale
Loeza routes grant in entertaining four rounder
In a back and forth junior welterweight tilt, Terron Grant and Alonso Loeza fought to a crowd pleasing finish with Grant earning a victory in his professional debut via unanimous decision. Grant came out on fire in the opener scoring some early points with a quick jab. He routinely beat Loeza to the punch which proved the difference in the fight. At the close of the fourth, both men were battered and bruised. The final frame ended with an exclamation point as the men swung for the fences. The judges scored the bout 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37. – Anthony Springer Jr.
