Sonnen Confident for Silva Showdown

Story by Brady Crytzer

For one of the biggest underdogs in recent memory, Chael Sonnen is brimming with confidence.

Why? He is a notoriously gritty wrestler familiar with the standing outside of the limelight, and with the biggest fight of his career on August 7th against pound-for-pound great Anderson Silva the Oregon-based middleweight is all smiles. A shot at the world middleweight championship is something that most men could only dream of; never one for subtlety, Sonnen wears his heart on his sleeves.

"I could pull Anderson Silva out of his hotel room any night and beat the crap out of him, but I made a commitment to wait until August 7th to do that."
Sonnen, a long time MMA veteran with a wealth of experience, has always risen to the occasion. While he was generally regarded as a sturdy journeyman for most of his career, recent victories over former WEC titlist Paulo Filho and number one contender Nate Marquardt have boosted Sonnen’s confidence exponentially.

"I'm the toughest guy in the company,” boasted Sonnen. “There has never been a guy with earrings that can out-tough me and he's not gonna be the first."
Although he is considered to be widely overmatched by most pundits for his showdown with Silva at UFC 117, Sonnen has not held back on criticizing Silva. Whether speaking about his fashion-sense or history as champion, the media-savvy Sonnen has held nothing back.
"I've never had a problem with what he does in the cage,” Sonnen explained. “I don't believe in sportsmanship and honor. It's a fight. I just don't like him. I don't have to have a reason, not everybody can like everybody. I'm going to got out there and take his belt on (August) 7th and Dana's gonna fire him on the 8th."

A would-be politician in his home state of Oregon and former NCAA All-American wrestler, Sonnen is not ashamed of his popularity among fight fans. He is also not hesitant to speak to the quality of his opponent’s fans.
"I don't think Anderson has any fans. He's the only guy in the world that has been a champion for 4 years and only has one sponsor. Nobody wants to associate themselves with him. Nobody wants to dress like him or be like him. I, on the other hand, have numerous sponsors who do very well. That should tell you all you need to know about his popularity."
Whether it is as world middleweight champion or simply as former challenger, Chael Sonnen is always looking ahead. The real question becomes whether or not it’s inside the Octagon.
"I make all my comments with my political future in mind. I received 96.3 percent of the vote. I'm wildly popular."
